The organ demand drastically exceeds the available supply, which is why more people need to be organ donors. People should become organ donors because of the limited availability of organs and the chance to save many lives. Although many people think that if you are an organ donor doctors won’t try as hard to save your life, but that is not the case at all. According to an article from World of Health â€Å"A wish to donate organs for transplant will not reduce efforts to save a patient’s life. Organs will not be removed until all life-saving efforts have†¦show more content†¦It is said that  ¨While about 80% of Americans support donation, there are fewer than 50% who agree to organ donation if approached upon the death of a family member ¨ (Organ Donation). D octors usually ask family members if it is okay to donate the organs, even if they say they are donors on their licence. The opt-out policy would allow you to donate your organs regardless of your family members saying no when approached upon your death. An opt-out policy is not the only thing that we can do to help increase the number of available organs. Plato's views on ethics and virtue are scattered throughout his corpus as a recurring concern. A selection of examples will be harvested from the major dialogues of Plato in order to yield a thorough and sustained treatment on the topic. In the Meno, Plato, through the mouthpiece of Socrates, inquires as to whether or not virtue can be taught. The general argument follows as such: Socrates (the character) suggests that virtue must be a constant thing though it has various manifestations. He questions Meno as to what the essence of virtue is. Throughout the dialogue, Meno gives examples of particular virtues:justice, courage, temperance, wisdom and others, rather than the essence of virtue (Plato, 1999). This follows in an extended process that, in Meno's perspective, leads to a sort of numbing. At this point, Meno backs the question up and brings to fore the classical paradox that, if we do not know what we are looking for we will not be able to recognise it even upon seeing it. Socrates then espouses the well-known Platonic position that all knowledge is really just a form of recollection or anamneisis, "for as all nature is akin, and the soul has learned all things; there is no difficulty in her eliciting or as men say learning, out of a single recollection all the rest" (Plato, 1999). Socrates then narrows the question to whether or not virtue is a sort of knowledge. Socrates states that since virtue works only in tandem with wisdom, that it does not occur 'naturally'. As such, it cannot simply be knowledge. The discussion is then refocused on the question of whether or not virtue can be taught. If so, Socrates proposes, virtue must have teachers. Socrates gives the tongue-in-cheek example of the sophists. This caste had long profited by scandalously pawning pedantic maxims. The issue of whether virtue could be taught hinged on the status of who could teach virtue. Yet, since everyone who claimed to teach virtue was confused on the issue, (at least after meeting Socrates) virtue must be unteachable. However, the volitionism of Socrates comes through in this dialogue suggesting that there must be some sort of knowing the goes hand in hand with right action. A clear example is in the words of the Socratic character: "And do you really imagine, Meno, that a man knows evils to be evils and desires them notwithstanding?" (Plato, 1999). This question is ironic, if not rhetorical in tone and suggest a sort of knowledge that is paired with virtue. The conclusion of the Meno is ironic as virtue can be sullied, according to the accuser's of Socrates. He was that culture's scapegoat for the 'corruption of youth' in the Apology. The Euthyphro engages the question of what is it that makes things good. Euthyphro (the character) suggests that it is the gods who determine what is good. Socrates counters that the gods are in discord on the matter and, as such, they could not provide a steady guide (Plato, 1993, p.13 Euthyphro). Socrates suggests that men, just as much as gods can posit that wrong ought to be punished. The tricky part in linking divine command with morality is in determining the chronology. Does the command precede the conception of good or vice versa. Socrates also shows himself to be a volitionist at this point, believing right knowledge will lead to right action. The Euthyphro gives no closure on what it is that makes virtue holy. Or, even if the gods command according to good or decide the good by their command. In any case, the constant portrait is drawn that virtue is a demand of life, "to live well amounts to the same thing as to live honourably and justly" (Ibid, p. 83, Crito). The character of Socrates bore this belief with a vital commitment. It was for this reason that he engaged in the discussions which he dubbed philosophy. After he is sentenced to death he confirms this commitment issuing the following request to his friends: "When my sons grow up, gentlemen, if you think that they are putting money or anything else before goodness, take your revenge by plaguing them as I plagued you" (Ibid, p. 67, Apology). This unwavering commitment has sealed the Socratic example in the annals of history which has lasted even to this day. Aristotle Aristotle has a more systematic approach in his writings. He produces treatises which are more likely to yield positive conclusions. Furthermore, his works are lengthy enough to exhaustively treat his subject matter. There are two works dubbed 'Ethics' the former, called Eudemian Ethics and the latter, on which we shall draw, called Nicomachean Ethics named after his son who edited the work (Aristotle, 1980, p. v). Herein the latter text will be referred to simply as the Ethics. Virtue, for Aristotle was of a very different breed that for Plato. Firstly, virtue was not a singular entity (as Socrates insists in the Meno, but rather there are very divergent forms of virtue. Virtue, for Aristotle happens only at the rational level. The prceding levels of having a soul are only vegetable (by which he means biotic) or animal (by which he means sensory). Man alone has the place as the 'rational animal.' And this leads to happiness. This could even be derived from the classic difference between Plato and Aristotle on universals in general. For Plato the universals or 'eidos' preceded the particulars. Conversely, for Aristotle, universals were discerned by the examples of a large group of particulars. Secondly, the good is not seen as good only in itself, but in that it leads to happiness. In the Ethics, Aristotle bifurcates virtue into two types of excellence, intellectual and moral. Aristotle describes moral virtue as a state of character rather than a passion or faculty (Ibid, p. 35-36). The virtuous character state is a deeply rooted disposition of a person toward the good. Aristotle notes that virtue does not come under compulsion; rather, it is the free action of virtue that warrants its praise (Ibid, p. 48). Furthermore, the choice cannot be an arbitrary choice made spontaneously. Rather, the account for virtuous action must be discerned at an earlier time, in order for an action to qualify as virtuous (Ibid, p. 55). It is here we see a sharp contrast with Platonic ethics which is concerned with virtue qua virtue. Aristotle emphasizes a necessity of pairing thought with praxis. Aristotle, in his love for organization describes many sorts of virtue. Yet they all follow the same rule of thumb, moderation or the 'virtue intermediate' (Ibid 95). Some would say he ta kes moderation too far, it guides everything! There is a second principle that shapes right action. It must be noted that, for Aristotle, ethics had to do with 'the good life' conceived holistically. Aristotle was a thinker who was, as is well known, well within the camp of eudemonic thinkers. Conclusion Both thinkers, however, share a deep commitment to the pursuit of the good and to the explication of the essence and content of virtue. Pope Benedict XVI: A Life and Papacy Revealed   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On April 19, 2005 Joseph Alois Ratzinger was elected as successor to the beloved Pope John Paul II. He was formally enthroned during the papal inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005 and chose the name of Pope Benedict XVI (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). Elected at the age of 78 Pope Benedict XVI was the oldest to be elected Pope since Clement XII in 1730 (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). Pope Benedict is only the eight German Pope to be elected into office the last being Adrian VI (1522-1523) (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). His Early Life   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Joseph Alois Ratzinger was born on Holy Saturday April 16, 1927 at his parents' home in Marktl am Inn, Germany (Ewtn P. Ben XVI bio). He was the first person baptized in the Easter Water and blessed at the Easter Vigil (Ewtn P. Ben XVI bio). His father, Joseph Ratzinger Sr., was a policeman from a family of farmers from lower Baveria and his mother, Maria Ratzinger, was from a family of South Tyrol (Ewtn P. Ben XVI bio). In 1929 Joseph and his family moved to Tittmoning, a small town on the Salzach River, on the Austrian border (Ewtn P. Ben xvi bio). In 1932 his father's outspoken criticism of the Nazis required the family to relocate to Auschau am Inn (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). His father retired in 1937, and his family moved to Hufschlag, outside of Traunstein (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). There Joseph began studying classical languages at his local high school (Ewtn P. Ben XVI bio). In 1939, he entered the minor seminary in Traunstein, his first step toward the priesthood (Ewtn P. Ben XVI bio). In 1943, at the age of 16, Ratzinger was drafted with many of his friends into the anti-aircraft artillery corps (Wiki P. Ben XVI bio). According to John Allen, author of Cardinal Ratzinger: The Vatican’s Enforcer of Faith, â€Å"Ratzinger was only briefly a member †¦ and not an enthusiastic one at that.† This was mostly due to the fact that an infected finger prevented him from learning how to shoot (Time 40). Others also maintain that single quotes from Dominus Iesus are not indicative of intolerance or an unwillingness to engage in dialogue with other faiths, and this is clear from a reading of the entire document (Locker P. Ben XVI bio). They point out that Ratzinger has been very active in promoting inter-faith dialogue (Locker P. Ben XVI bio). Specifically, they argue that Ratzinger has been instrumental at encouraging reconciliation with Lutherans (Locker P. Ben XVI bio). In defending Dominus Iesus, Benedict himself has stated that his belief is that inter-faith dialogue should take place on the basis of equal human dignity, but that equality of human dignity should not imply that each side is equally correct (Locker P. There are many views on how people feel Pope Benedict will do while he holds the title of Pope .When asked about her overall thought of Pope Benedict XVI Lea Gagliardo, a religion teacher for many years, said â€Å"she feels that he will be a wonderful continuation of the beloved ways of John Paul II.† Overall the attitude seems to be that Benedict will be a great Christina leader and he will be able to continue the ways of the beloved John Paul II.

“Africville” Poem analysis Essay

In Maxine Tynes’ poem â€Å"Africville,† the theme addressed is despite how the community of Africville was completely destroyed, their pride still prospers and remains in the minds and hearts of all its citizens. Tynes uses repetition, tone of voice, symbolism and imagery to dynamically convey the theme. Throughout the poem, Tynes exhibits a universal tone used to evoke pain and anger, as well as a more contrasting tone that demonstrates pride. This contrast of the specific tone used is demonstrated by Tynes in the first stanza of the poem: â€Å"We are the dispossessed Black of the land/creeping with shadows/with life/with pride† (2-5). â€Å"We are the dispossessed Black of the land/ creeping with shadows† generates a feeling of loss which invokes the event in which the citizens of Africville were dislodged from their beloved land. The following part of the phrase, â€Å"With life/with pride† contrasts the first half by emitting a sense of pride which effectively conveys a more positive aura. This connotation is used to display how the community of Africville still lives on after they were evicted from their Promised Land. In addition to the tone of voice, the speaker uses repetition and well-founded word choice continually in various fragments of the poem. The speaker tells the readers of the poem that â€Å"No house is Africville. /No road, no tree, no well.† (25-26). The word â€Å"no† is repeated throughout the passage to emphasize and convey the theme; that Africville is not simply a location, but a part of the community itself. Thirdly, the theme is intensified by the frequent use of symbolism and imagery. It is recognized that the speaker uses imagery to foreshadow how the Africville community is a strong and hopeful society. The last stanza highlights this in the last few lines: â€Å"We wear Our Africville face and skin and heart. /For all the world. / For Africville.† (33-35). Readers notice that the word â€Å"Our† is capitalized. This addresses how the speaker associates the Africville community with the impression of importance and high value to the speaker itself. Furthermore, the symbolism plays a crucial role in the poem; â€Å"This park is green; but / Black, so Black with community.† (15-16). The colour green is used to represent the peaceful community that Africville used to be. â€Å"Black† is used to contrast the Green by associating itself with the evil of the decision to demolish Africville. In conclusion, Tynes uses a combination of literary and figurative language  to convey the theme; although Africville is gone, its community lives on.
